Evaluation Question 1

                Effect
Scene
Evidence

Use Of Narrative – developing the story, setting the theme of the film

Establishes an ongoing rivalry between the two gangs. The words and dialogue used immediately shows it is urban based. Words such as 'blud' and other slang promotes a language that a teenage audience could relate to more.

Mise-en-scene – locations, props, time of shoot

Portrays the urban theme through alleys, tunnels, graffiti and flats. The clothes worn are all representing urban and gang natured themes through hoodies and ‘trackies’. These are all stereotypial of an urban theme and an urban based film.

Editing techniques – slow mo’s, cross cutting sound etc

Lots of quick cuts to promote the running scene to engage the audience in a sense of urgency and adrenaline during the fight and chase scenes. The fast cuts and different length shots make a varied chase scene which is not as predictable as constant edits and cuts.

Use of camera – high angle, panning, hand held, close up, medium shot etc

A mixture and large range of different angles and shots such as panning and long shots, during the running scenes promote urgency. And engage the audience into a faster paced scene. The film's speed varies from scene to scene, engaging the audience further.

Special effects – Titles, transitions, flashbacks etc

We used distorted titles to promote a crumbling urban society and a black and white effect for the gangs to make the scene more engaging and interesting for the audience. Kidulthood also used this effect in its film.

Characters

The characters enhance the theme of urban gangs, rivalry and lifestyle. The clothes, dialogue and characteristics show an urban theme alike the films we took inspiration from.

Film Poster

  • These are posters we created for our film;
  • These are the print-based ideas for the distribution of our film.

Distribution

we have looked into different companies to advertise/distribute our film one of them is Film4 production company, Film4 would be a good company for the film as they produce and show lots of films which are either popular or new and and they would advertise it through their website and adverts.
Film4 have a number of award winning films, slowly moving them up in the list of successful companies.

We have thought to use social networking advertisements to distribute and market, as it will be advertised to people over the world so people who don’t normally watch teen dramas will possibly be interested. we will also market through Facebook and Twitter using banner ads and magazines such as Empire. Also we will market through the cast going on chat shows such as Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton, also programmes such as Daybreak, as well as radio chat show such as The Breakfast Show. This will get the DVD out there and will be advertised to many audiences.

the soundtracks we use could provide a higher interest from audiences. Like Plan B in Ill Manors who released an album whic was set as the sountrack for the entire film.

Production Company

For the production company(ies) of our film I researched which companies produced films that we based our film on. Adulthood, Kidulthood and Ill Manors were produced by Revolver Entertainment. I think this is a good company to use as the films the produce have been successful and made a large box office profit.

revolver is a successful British film company with pioneering distribution and releases. In the past 10 years Revolver's independent spirit and flair has been awarded with 18 of the industry's top awards for marketing excellence.

Use of soundtrack

For the first track in the film we used one that started slow to build up into Karl's introduction. The song was a dupstep remix of the prodigy's song 'breathe'. It was a song with an urban type feel.

The second tune was an; instrumental of a remix of the prodigy's remix of plan B's ill manors. We felt that plan B's ill manors was the right song for our running scene as it created suspense then after we made a pause for Lewis's line 'get him', the drop and beat after that was appropriate for the chase scene(s).
For the last track we felt we needed a fast paced dub step sounding track and we found Hostiles - recognition (teaser) on a mixtape website. we felt it was a good  build up towards the end scene (fight scene) .

Music/soundtrack

Music is a vital part in our film, for suspense, action and the drama. We used the best music we thought appropriate for our film. After a lot of trialling and testing we found the songs we found suited the film correctly.

At first we were going to use one track throughout the film, which was a track we created ourselves. Then we tried different songs all the way through. In the end we decided to three songs in the film to change the speed and mood of each scene. each song apart from Hostile's dubstep track at the end is a remix.

first track   -  The prodigy - Breathe
second track: -  Plan B    - Ill manors
third track: Hostile  - recognition (teaser)

Audience

We are aiming our film towards ages 15-20+ specifically at teenagers and young adults, because our film alike adulthood contains inappropriate scenes including drugs, gangs, drugs and violence.
Most urban thriller films such as kidulthood and adulthood are rated 15 for their contents

Location planning and route

We used Google maps to plan our chase and film route, using alleys and lanes we know to stage the film. Obviously we didn't film the entire route, we kept cutting to different parts of the route, such as alleyways and streets, not main roads.

this is a map with the drawn route

Editing and Adding Titles

This is a short video on us editing the beginning titles to our thriller opening

Effects Editing

During the final stages of editing the sequences of our film, I thought about adding an effect to the film to try and make it appear more urban.

I thought of a sepia - posterised effect like this as it portrays an urban image well, but we decided it was too extreme

instead i decreased the brightness and fiddled about with other effects like that, just to give it a slightly more edgier look. which in the end i decided to use.

Editing

editing

we are editing the final cut of our film! we are adding all the appropriate music and playing with the effects to see which one will make our film look good. we used iMovie 09 to edit our film. using iMovie was hard as we had problems with macs as they kept freezing. we also thought there was not enough effects and sounds on there to suit our needs.

Film Titles and credits

We decided to include credits such as the director and some of the actors featured in the film in our opening, we thought it would add more to the drama and the chase scene in the film. We thought the credits would suit the film and the genre it represents.
We added the titles and credits mainly next to the actors when their name appears but in most cases we just added them where there was space or where we thought it would look good.  We looked for an urban-looking font but found 'cracked' which we thought would suit the film.

Brainstorming ideas for our Opening sequence

For our opening sequence we have gone with a Urban-type-action thriller such as Adulthodd, Kidulthood, shank etc.

We have brainstormed hundreds of names, some orginal, some random, and some completely irrelevant. We are thinking of something along the lines of 'Carnage' or Temper'.

We were thinking prehaps we could base the film on the 2011 riots, gang wars, knofe crime, all the typical urban 'chav' themes.
